The Hour of Auer – Just a Few Quotes


auerI’m currently reading “Violin Playing As I Teach It” by Leopold Auer, the violin virtuoso and iconic master teacher of even greater virtuosos like Heifetz and Elman. I recommend this book to any student and teacher of the violin. The wisdom in this book crosses over the centuries and applies to all of us who struggle to master this magical instrument. His wording is so beautifully crafted and poignant. I find some of his writing humorous, although probably unintentionally so.

“The very start of all violin playing-the apparently simple matter of holding the instrument, for instance, before the bow is brought into play at all-has a wide range of possibilities for good or evil.” I like this guy- he’s intense!
